Here are some suggestions for interacting with homeless friends on a Bridges RUN:
Create Opportunities for Fellowship with Adults
- Use lunch or other item of distribution to open discussion.
- Shake hands and make eye contact. Body language indicates your openness to conversation.
- Learn something from the people we reach. Listen and ask questions.
- Have a few generic topics ready - sports, NY City, weather.
- Ask if we can help in any way.
- When distributing clothing, act like a personal shopper - help with sizes and styles.
- Share your interests - poetry, music, art.
- Respect all faiths; do not proselytize.
Create Opportunities for Fellowship with Children at the Emergency Residency Program at the YMCA
- When visiting, bring necessities to moms for their children and start a friendly conversation about their children.
- Find out individual needs. Go back to your school, home, etc., put the package together with the child's name and location, and ask a Run Coordinator to deliver it the following week.
- Prepare an art project to do with the children.
- Read stories, play games.
- Give out cookies or other treats.
